OES Consulting conducted a structural engineering feasibility and assessment for a proposed first-floor extension over an unsupported single-storey building near a watercourse. This project required careful planning to ensure both structural integrity and environmental sensitivity.

OES Consulting delivered specialised structural engineering design services for this project, including:

Structural Feasibility Assessment Evaluated the existing structure to establish a viable solution for the first-floor extension, ensuring minimal impact on the single-storey building below.
Independent Frame Design Proposed an external, rigid frame with full-span capability to support the extension without relying on the existing structure.
Material Optimisation Utilised lightweight timber walls, floors, and roofing to reduce vertical stress on the frame, allowing for a slimmer floor and roof profile.
Lateral Stability Engineering Employed a rigid beam and column fixity system to enhance lateral stability while reducing beam depth to meet height restrictions.
Foundation Design Designed independent piled foundations with above-ground pile caps to ensure uninterrupted watercourse flow and facilitate straightforward substructure installation.

Challenges and solutions

Faced with limited structural support from the existing building and strict height restrictions, OES implemented an independent rigid frame with external columns to avoid interference with the original structure. Lightweight materials reduced stress on the frame, and specialised foundation designs maintained watercourse flow, meeting both structural and environmental requirements.
